They all were selected to compete in the regionals in Walworth. They learned so much about their subjects, and their classmates' subjects. They were introduced to doing research, and the art of public presentation. Way to go, first graders!

We have practiced writing letters to our friends and classmates.  Finally, we were ready to write a real letter and mail it!  For our final project we wrote letters to our favorite Disney characters and sent them to Disney World!  The rumor is that we will get a returned autographed picture from our favorite characters within a couple of months.  We are keeping our fingers crossed!

Activities included building a free standing structure with Solo cups, building with 100 marshmallows and toothpicks, working on circumference while licking a Tootsie Pop 100 times, creating art out of the number 100, and 100 second workouts. It was a great day for all!
]]><![CDATA[Day 6: Green Builder Visit]]>Mon, 10 Feb 2014 15:42:12 GMThttp://www.traverschool.org/blog/day-6-green-builder-visitThe fifth through eighth graders participate in a year-long project-based learning experience based on a theme.  This year’s theme is about ecology and living sustainable lives.

We focused on alternative energies in the middle part of the year.  Students learned about harnessing wind and solar power, hydropower, nuclear power, geothermal power, and the use of biofuels.

Jeff Auberger, of Preservation Homes in Elkhorn, visited us in January to show our students how he uses alternative energies in the construction of his homes.  He brought along some alternative building materials, blueprints, and presented photos of the types of homes he builds.

At the end of his presentation, he even gave away a water-saving shower head!  Blake was the lucky winner.

We want to give sincere thanks to Jeff for taking the time to talk with our students.  His passion and enthusiasm for building greener homes made for a great presentation!

They listened to stories and talked about camping experiences.

The two classes read a story about Harriet Tubman then had questions they had to discuss in a small group. They did this while enjoying a yummy snack. This took place during Language Arts for our CAFE mini lesson.
