Mr. Nottestad recently finished a square dancing unit with some of the classes. Mr. N likes the square dancing unit because it teaches teamwork, helps practice good listening, and, as you will see, is just plain fun!

During the last evening of February, Traver School held its inaugural arts festival. All the students had artwork and sketchbooks on display, as well as art submissions for the anthology competition. The theme of the anthology this year was “Make a Mark”. In addition to artwork, the seventh graders presented a film festival, showcasing their technology projects. Attendance was excellent and enthusiasm ran high. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience what it is really like to have an audience see and appreciate their work. This festive gathering will surely become an annual event in the deep of winter! -Ms. Magnuson First graders enjoy learning how to count money. Creating a "school store" makes it almost like real life!
The students take turns being the shopkeeper. The students start by purchasing one item. The shopkeeper needs to figure out if he or she owes them some change. Then each student must purchase two items. After adding up the total, the student needs to gather enough money to buy the items. Again, the shopkeeper might owe them some change. Addition, subtraction AND regrouping all come into play! The fifth grade took their first skiing lessons at Grand Geneva in February. Most had never skied before so Mrs. Mott took a video of their first time down the learner hill.
Recently fifth graders did projects about the different places colonists lived during the early 1700s...they all chose to share their information about the New England, middle and southern colonies as game show or talk show formats. This made learning about our American history fun for everyone. To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday grades 1-4 had a special morning to honor him. They made Thing 1 and 2, they wrote stories, listened to stories read by Tim Tebow and Justin Bieber, and made Oobleck. In math class, they did a graphing assignment with colored goldfish. Ms. Rauland is mixing technology with traditional learning in Spanish class. On the left, the girls are working at one of the vocab stations to sort words into the four article groups (el, la los, las). The right picture is of students working at the listening station on their ipads to work on pronunciation of the unit's vocabulary words.
Valentine's day was full of fun activities in 2nd grade! For math, we sorted candy hearts into groups and then made a bar graph to show our results. We also did a lot of estimating activities such as "how many candy hearts would it take to make a foot?" and "how many candy hearts can you balance on your desk before they fall over?" We wrapped up our day with our Valentine's party where we exchanged valentine cards and played a few games such as pass the tissue paper heart and heart lava.
The kids in Spanish classes spent the class period learning Spanish vocabulary related to Valentine's Day, creating an acrostic poem and eating some sweet treats!
First grade students joined 2nd through 4th grade in a special day learning about the Arctic. After learning about the amazing animals that live there, our class wanted to create a BIG bulletin board about them! The students traced large pictures from a projected image onto paper. They carefully added details and a little color. The result is very COOL indeed!
Grades 4K though 4th grade attended Camp-Read-A-Lot during their library class recently. The students bought blankets, pillows and stuffed animals and made themselves comfortable around the “campfire”. A tent and twinkling stars (Christmas lights) helped the students imagine they were on a campout. They listened to campfire stories and participated in chants.
